As much as the Celtics want both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to pan out, it’s only natural for everyone else to compare the two.
Tatum generally seems to receive the edge because he’s the more polished player between the two. But Brown showed a lot last year by recovering from his slow start to the season. Now the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft is helping his case further with his recent play in Team USA’s exhibitions.
“Without a doubt for me, I would choose Jaylen Brown,” 5 Out producer Tyler Devitte said in the show’s latest episode. “I don’t think he’s reached his peak yet. I think he’s a better athlete. He might end up being a better shooter when it’s all said and done. I would take Jaylen Brown over Jayson Tatum.”
Though some still remain rocksteady in the Tatum camp.
“(Brown) has looked better, but I told you after that first game (against the US Select Team), I’m starting to think, maybe he’s just inconsistent. I will always go with the known. I’m going to go with Tatum … You know what he can be, it’s just a question of whether he’s going to get there or not. You don’t know what Brown is going to be.”
Either way, the Celtics have something any team would want: two impactful wings with high ceilings who approach the game differently. Yet, Brown is still waiting for an extension.
