Scouting Report: Allen’s shooting stroke impresses scouts, as he can be deadly from three-point range. In today’s NBA, where three-point shooting and pace and space reign supreme, Allen could be a nice compliment as a three-point shooter off the bench. Allen also possesses explosive athleticism, allowing him to drive to the basket aggressively. He can run the pick and roll and attack closeouts, either by shooting or passing. His ball handling ability is advanced for a two guard, which could help him profile as a combo guard.
Allen has a high basketball IQ, aided by years of collegiate experience under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewki. His high motor, intense competitiveness, and willingness to make hustle plays are traits that coaches adore. His offensive versatility, whether it be scoring of the dribble, at the free throw line, or from three, draws coaches in even further. Allen is rather undersized for a traditional shooting guard, which hurts him on defense. His lack of length, combined with below average lateral quickness, could pose problems for him at the NBA level against quicker opponents.
Notes: After his sophomore campaign, Allen was predicted as a likely lottery pick. He decided to stay at Duke to chase a championship. His level of play hasn’t been up to the same caliber, and thus he is now considered to be a late first-round selection. Allen has a well documented history of questionable character decisions on the court. Throughout the first three years of his collegiate career, he tripped multiple opponents, including being suspended for a game as a result. In the lane agility test at the NBA combine, Allen’s time of 10.31 was among the top five best scores in combine history. His 40.5-inch vertical placed fifth among all combine participants. After a strong combine performance, Allen’s draft stock has trended upwards, as he has cemented himself as a first-round pick.
